Snap. Click Flash. Wow! Every picture that Filipino Ricky Ladia takes is a work of art. The Nikon professional was here last week to conduct a two-day workshop on creative lighting and Off-Cam Flash that was organised by the Philippine Expat Photographers – Oman, more popularly known as PEPs-Oman, at the Majan Continental Hotel in Bausher.

The workshop was attended by about 45 PEPs-Oman members and the two main sponsors main sponsors of the event were Khimjis and SRK Photgraphic Equipment. Also attending the opening and closing function as chief guests Rose Cormack, the wife of Nawras CEO, Ross Cormack, and Amelita A. Villamora, the president of the Filipino Social Club (Filcosoc).

At the workshop all the members were given practical demonstrations in portrait photography and the opportunity to shoot live models in high-key and low-key lighting conditions, using umbrellas, softboxes and reflectors and a variety of other photography equipment, including different types of flash, flash triggers.

The next day of the workshop, Ricky put all the workshop attendees to the test by allowing them to use the equipment in any way they wished to while shooting models – Rap Palma, part-time model and housewife, Gabriella, who works in an oil and gas company in HR, and Lyka Krbacevic-Espiritu, who works as cabin crew for Oman Air. The make-up artist and stylist for the three models was Jerry Batac.

At the end of the day, Ricky made a personal assessment of everyone’s work and prizes were awarded to six persons for the most artistic and imaginative photographs.

This is Ricky’s second visit to Oman. He was here in Oman for the first PEPs-Oman workshop in October that was on the subject of studio lighting. He loves the country and the people. “This is a great place to be in and I’m here again and I look forward to coming back here in the future too”.

He says some other places that he would like to visit in the future are India and Vietnam. “The colour palette in these places is just too good. I would love to go to these places and shoot extensively”.

Ladia who’s been taking amazing pictures for the past 25 years and has established himself as a numero uno in the field of photography, says he first started taking pictures when he was in college.

He says he doesn’t have any preferences with regard to subject. “I shoot anything and everything under the sun, whether it is still life, portraits, landscape, nature, or food. Previously Ricky worked in a design studio in Riyadh.
